IDP Relief Dispatches & Funds Utilized

Exercise books and other educational aid to the value of more than 700 thousand were distributed to the children in IDP camps in Vavuniya, in the northern part of Sri Lanka. More than 280 thousand persons rendered homeless by the conflict have taken shelter in Vauniya. Almost all of them are housed in Manik Farm in Vavuniya. Vauniya YMCA with the coordination of Alliance Development Trust distributed children’s story books and educational aids to 1211 children in Zone-4 of Manik Farm. Special schools are set up by the authorities in camps.

Up to date approximately 280,083 IDPs are accommodated in Vavuniya. 15,000 IDPs from Jaffna and 6,000 from Mannar & 3000 from Trinco have already been in Vavuniya. They all are sheltered in Manik Farm area in temporary sheds. The biggest camp in Vavuniya is the Manik Farm which is divided into many zones. We are supporting the IDPs in Zone 2 Camp with Milk Food and Nutritional items for the children under 3 years.

The funds pledged, received, and spent are shown in the appended format. The pledges are coordinated by World Alliance of YMCAs, APAY and Y-Care International UK/Ireland.

Camp Areas	Approval of Authority
A camp through Mannar YMCA, Nelunkulam Technical College camp, Gamini Maha Vidyalaya Camp, Manik Farm Zone 2, Point Pedro in Karaveddi Div.,Chaverchery Hindu Ladies College Welfare Centre, Jaffna.	Through the Government Agent in Vavuniya, Div. Secretaries in Musali & Nanantan, & Govt. Agent Jaffna. All approvals obtained and distribution witnessed.

Details of the Seven Consignments of Relief Items sent to the Welfare Centres in Mannar and Vavuniya amounting to
Rs. 1,608,999/80 are appended below.

1st Consignment sent through Mannar YMCA – Date Sent : 20th January 2009

First consignment of Milk Powder for identified 232 children below 5 years in 9 camps in the Mannar District was sent to mannar YMCA for distribution through the Divisional Secretaries of Musali and Nanantan. The Milk Powder thus sent was enough for one month’s consumption of each child. Details of consignment is as follows:

2nd Consignment sent through Vavuniya YMCA – Date Sent : 13th March 2009 Camp Sent : Nelunkulam Technical College Transit Camp

The second consignment was sent to Vavuniya YMCA which networked with the GA and Alliance Development Trust. Junior Executive Secretary of NCY Mr. T.C. Brownson visited to supervise the distribution. These items were distributed to the inmates of Nelunkulam Technical College Transit Camp. Details of the consignment is as follows:

3rd Consignment sent through Vavuniya YMCA – Date Sent : 15th April 2009 Camp Sent : Gamini Maha Vidyalayam

Out of the second consignment of 1170 packets (400 gr.) of milk food, 870 packets were issued to IDPs housed in Gamini Maha Vidyalayam on the request of Vavuniya Methodist Church (Rev. Princent) and the balance 300 packs were issued to families housed in Poowarasankulam Welfare Centre on the request of Vepankulam St. Joseph’s Church (Rev. Fr. Anton)

4th Consignment sent through Vavuniya YMCA – Date Sent : 27th April 2009 Camp Sent : Zone 2 of Manik Farm

The 4th Consignment was distributed with the coordination of Alliance Development Trust and Government Agent to IDP families in Zone 2 of the Manik Farm.

5th Consignment sent Point Pedro YMCA – Date Sent : 14th May 2009 Camp Sent : Nelliady Madya Maha Vidyalaya –

The 4th Consignment was sent in cash to Point Pedro YMCA since there is no access by land to Point Pedro.
