Mullaitivu: YMCA is back to serve the community
The YMCA was operating in Mullaitivu before the war erupted and serving its people through varieties of activities, especially the children and youth. With the war, the transport access to Mullaitivu was greatly restricted and the area was isolated from the other parts of the country. At the same time, due to time-to-time military operations and other destructions, the members of the YMCA were also displaced.
With the peaceful situation that emerging after the end of war, YMCA is regrouping its members with the leadership of Dr. Jeyakularaja, the President and the Christian clergies in the area. The brother YMCAs around the country are coming forward under the patronage of the National Council and supporting Mullaitivu YMCA to restart its activities. Mr. Nirmal De Fonseka the Vice president of NCY-SL visited Mullaitivu on 7th November 2011 along with Mr. Chandrakumar the Programme Coordinator of Play Therapy and handed over around 2900 books to the newly opened YMCA Library. These books would be a great attraction to the children and youth in the area to come around the YMCA.YMCA is now getting into their other activities, which would serve the community in Mullaitivu at large and welcoming generous supports of well-wishers.

“Reflect a Christian way of life, with love, understanding, openness, transparency, respect for everybody’s views and tolerance”

This was the collective theme of the Refresher Programme for the key leaders of YMCA , conducted on 29th – 30th April 2011 at YMCA International Center(YIC) , Kurana, Katunayake. Participated by 45 YMCA key leaders from 22 member YMCAs together with the Executives of NCY.
The main focuses of the programme were; vision, mission, membership development, management and lay -professional partnership.Different methodologies were used by the facilitators to communicate with the participants in order to achieve the expected out come of the programme. Followings are the main outcomes of the programme:
“Referring to the contemporary social realities, YMCA should address the issues of social justice, governance, human rights, etc as of part of its mission to establish God’s Kingdom.”
“We all have to work together as one family sharing each other’s resources and working for a better world for our people. Today’s context we all need to have the vision, mission and required capacity.”
“The vision and mission of the YMCA and its role in the present day context based on the Paris Basis. YMCA is a pioneer in the ecumenical Movement and many people of all faiths join the YMCA precisely because we are known and respected as a trusted Christian organisation with programmes for the whole community. “
“YMCAs in Sri Lanka are surrounded by different communities. Our challenge is to connect different communities to the YMCA as members. We need to identify different strategies; systems and structures to get more active members in to the YMCA.”
“YMCA is a membership Organization and it should have maximum members around it and we should do everything possible to mobilize more and more people. The common people should be the owners of YMCA”
“YMCA is a movement. This essentially means its management practices should reflect its membership centeredness. This also means that the YMCAs should not be building / material centered. The building / material resources should come as a consequence of membership needs.”
“YMCA is a lay Christian Ecumenical Movement. YMCAs leadership should be by layman. Even if priests are there, they should be treated equal as any other Board member, priest should not be allowed to dominate the governance of the YMCA”
“In YMCA management and governance, it should reflect a Christian way of life. YMCA’s management should reflect love, understanding, openness, transparency, respect for everybody’s views, tolerance. With all these humane accommodations a YMCA must strive for excellence”
“YMCA should be ecumenical. It must be a expression and a manifestation of solidarity of all irrespective of class, religion, caste, race, social status, gender, age, etc. Balancing the social aspirations of all the above social groups is no doubt difficult. However, YMCA stands for that. It must practice a style of management towards reaching its ideal”
“ Lay professional partnership: This means that YMCA’s fulltime workers who are paid and part-time volunteer workers should work in partnership in a loving cohesive manner. Neither party should not see the other party in a different but a friend and colleague working towards a shared goal”
The programme was organized and conducted by the Movement Strengtheing Programme (MSP) Committee of the NCY of Sri Lanka.
